 Steps to Set Pressure Tank Air Charge

Preparation

Turn Off the Pump: Ensure the well pump is turned off to prevent water from entering the tank during the adjustment.

Drain the Tank: Completely drain the tank to remove all water. This can be done by opening a faucet in the house until the water stops flowing.

Adjusting the Air Pressure

Check the Pressure Switch Setting: Identify the cut-in pressure of your pressure switch. This is the pressure at which the pump turns on. Common settings are 30/50 psi or 40/60 psi.

Set the Air Charge: Adjust the air pressure in the tank to be 2 psi below the cut-in pressure. For example:

If the cut-in pressure is 40 psi, set the air charge to 38 psi.

If the cut-in pressure is 30 psi, set the air charge to 28 psi.

Final Steps

Recheck the Air Pressure: After adjusting, ensure the air pressure is correct using a pressure gauge.

Close the Drain Valve: Make sure the drain valve at the bottom of the tank is closed.

Turn the Pump Back On: Restore power to the pump and check for proper operation.

Important Notes

Always ensure there is a 20 psi difference between the cut-in and cut-off pressures to prevent rapid cycling of the pump.

Regularly check the air charge to maintain optimal performance of the pressure tank.
