NAVAJO COUNTY APPLAUDS APS DECISION TO CONVERT CHOLLA POWER PLANT TO NATURAL GAS
County leaders praise investment in reliable energy, local jobs, and the future of northeastern Arizona

Holbrook, AZ – The Navajo County Board of Supervisors today welcomed Arizona Public Service’s (APS) announcement that it will convert the Cholla Power Plant near Joseph City from coal to natural gas—an investment that preserves a critical energy resource and strengthens the region’s economic future. 

Cholla has long supported dependable energy, local jobs, and essential funding for schools and public services. APS’s decision marks an important step toward maintaining that legacy while supporting Arizona’s growing energy needs. 

Supervisor Jason Whiting, who has worked closely with APS over several years, said the conversion underscores the value of long‑term collaboration. “I’m excited by today’s announcement. Cholla has been part of our county’s history for generations, and this investment marks a strong new chapter. I appreciate APS for working with us over the past several years and for investing in Navajo County. This project supports good‑paying jobs, strengthens our economy, helps our schools, and ensures Arizona continues to have reliable, affordable power.”

Board Chairman Daryl Seymore highlighted the shared commitment behind the announcement. “APS’s continued investment demonstrates the importance of strong partnerships and focused leadership,” he said, noting Supervisor Whiting’s ongoing efforts. 

Supervisor Alberto Peshlakai, whose district includes Joseph City, emphasized the impact on the community. “Cholla has long been part of Joseph City’s identity, and this announcement brings renewed optimism for families and local businesses,” he said. 

The Board of Supervisors looks forward to continued collaboration with APS as the project moves forward. “This is a clear example of what can be achieved when communities, industry, and public leaders work together,” Whiting said. “Navajo County has helped power Arizona for generations, and we are ready to continue that role.”
