ROE REVERSED

The Supreme Court on Friday announced its official opinion overturning Roe v. Wade, confirming the outcome foreshadowed by a leaked initial draft opinion published by Politico in May showing the high court planned to vote in favor of relinquishing the landmark 1973 decision that established abortion as a constitutional American right.

Friday's Supreme Court decision will trigger an abortion ban in a number of U.S. states, including Texas. Lone Star State leaders reacted to the court's decision on Twitter, some lamenting the outcome while others lauded the court.

Gov. Greg Abbott released a statement following the ruling, proclaiming Texas a pro-life state. "The U.S. Supreme Court correctly overturned Roe v. Wade and reinstated the right of states to protect innocent, unborn children," Abbott wrote. "Texas is a pro-life state, and we have taken significant action to protect the sanctity of life. Texas has also prioritized supporting women's healthcare and expectant mothers in need to give them the necessary resources so that they can choose life for their child."
